Review: Parfum D' Empire Yuzu Fou

Yuzu Fou EDP ~ Contemporary, vibrant and bursting with mouth watering fresh citrus and crisp green notes, Yuzu Fou is one of those perfumes that makes you lose your cool for a minute and pump your fist in the air with a loud “Woo!” The grapefruit-meets-Mandarin-orange notes of Japanese yuzu are woven together with an unripe kumquat and orange bigarade (bitter orange), while an infusion of icy mint brings harmony to the blend. Lemony verbena absolute lends its kapow! factor and also brings a cool almost metallic edge. Tranquil yet passionate.

Yuzu Fou notes include: yuzu, kumquat, orange bigarade, mint, verbena absolute, green bamboo, neroli, white musk

One of the newest fragrances by fragrance house Parfum D' Empire, Yuzu Fou is a creation of Marc-Antoine Corticchiato. Of Corsican origin, Marc-Antoine Corticchiato was born in Morocco. He spent his childhood and adolescent years between the Moroccan countryside in his parents’ citrus orchards and the Corsican brush, where the family home is situated in the village of Cuttoli Corticchiato, near Ajaccio.

A horserider since the age of eight, horses rapidly became his passion. His curiosity, however, led him on another path. Very early on Marc-Antoine became intrigued by how plants produced their scent. What is the genesis and the function of perfume in vegetation? Why and how does a plant exhale different scents during its flowering cycle? It is the very process of the creation of a perfume in the heart of the plant that guided him throughout his studies of analytical chemistry up to his doctorate degree.

It was the chemical analysis of plants that led Marc-Antoine to perfumery. He began his professional career as a university researcher in charge of the laboratory devoted to the study of plants used in perfumery and their extraction methods. During this time he developed an in-depth knowledge of natural raw materials by « dissecting » them. His works are published in international research journals. On request, he developed his first aromatherapy creations. The formulation of these products, and in particular those grown organically, taught him to consider the olfactory and therapeutic constraints.

After several years of research, he started working at a perfume creation laboratory located in Paris. It was there that he finally let loose his creativity. At the same time he continued lecturing at ISIPCA.

Wanting only the very best plant extracts, Marc-Antoine set-up in 2000 a production factory of essential oils in Madagascar where he travels regularly. In 2003 Marc-Antoine Corticchiato created his own brand, Parfum d’Empire, using the noble raw materials so sought-after by the civilisations that were enriched and strengthened by the inter-mingling of different cultures.

REVIEW:
Yuzu Fou is a delightful, sparkling, lively fragrance that can't help but make you smile as you breathe in the first whiff of scent. Decidedly citrusy yet refreshingly hinting of mint with a lovely dry down of very light white musk, creator Marc-Antoine has another winner on his hands. To be honest, there's not a fragrance in the whole of the Parfum D' Empire fragrance collection that I don't like - even those with a more unisex or masculine vibe. He truly is a master of fragrance. Don't confuse the citrus-nature of this composition to mean it will render itself hopelessly fruity. It projects a light, clean , fresh citrus - yes - but the blending of the other notes allows a different fresh flavor all its own.

Yuzu Fou is available at Beautyhabit and Luckyscent ($99 - $110 a bottle). You can also find other fragrances in the Parfum D' Empire collection there as well.

10 Ways to Get Shiny, Healthy Hair

1. Avoid Dead Ends

Frederic Fekkai stylist Adir Abergel, who works with Jessica Biel, Camilla Belle and Jennifer Garner, says frequent trips to the salon is one of the first steps to healthy hair. "Getting regular trims and cutting off any dead ends will keep hair looking fresh," he says. Six to eight weeks is the recommended time between visits. However, you may need to trim more often if you create additional stress on the hair by frequent swimming or coloring.

2. Quick Shine

If you're in a hurry but your hair needs help, stylist David Babaii—who has worked with Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and Kate Hudson—says to massage a little hair polish through the hair. He recommends using his WildAid brand, saying that "the clean scent along with its shine properties will have your hair smelling freshly washed and looking extremely shiny." Flyaways can also contribute to an unkempt look. "To smooth the hair, put some of my Volcanic Ash Sculpting Clay onto an unwanted toothbrush then brush away those strays."

3. Protect with Products

You can try and avoid drying, flat-ironing and curling your hair, but for most people, using hair tools is inevitable. Therefore, stylist Rita Hazan, who colors Jennifer Lopez's hair, says: "It's important to use products that protect your hair from the heat." Also, if you dye your hair, Hazan recommends using shampoos and conditioners that are specifically made for color-treated tresses.

4. Weekly Buildup Removal

Stylist Ted Gibson, who works on the manes of Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie and Claire Danes, says: "Use a clarifying shampoo once-a-week to remove buildup from the hair." This is especially important if you use an excess of styling products or exercise and sweat a lot.

5. Keep Heat to a Minimum

You want to avoid over-drying your hair, says Manhattan-based stylist Michael Murphy, who has worked with supermodels Naomi Campbell and Elle Macpherson. This also forces variety—instead of blowing your hair dry, let it air-dry and wear it up or put it in foam rollers for a new wavy look. If you do blow-dry, "always use a nozzle on the end of your dryer," says Murphy. "It keeps hair from frizzing and prevents it from getting too close to the hair and burning it."

6. Try a Cold Blast

"Get shiny hair by shampooing with lukewarm water and finishing with a cool rinse," says Michael Murphy, who has trimmed and styled Katie Holmes's tresses. "This will seal the cuticle and give a more reflective quality to the hair." When the cuticle is closed—which happens when it's cold and it opens when it's warm and humid—the hair lays flat and therefore has more surface area to reflect shine and give the appearance of lustrous locks.

7. Work with Waves

Curly or wavy hair sometimes looks duller because light doesn't reflect off it as well. "Use a leave-in conditioner that will not only hydrate hair but create shine and not weigh down curls," says Adir Abergel, who works on the lush manes of Kate Beckinsale, Anne Hathaway and Nicole Richie. He recommends Paul Mitchell The Conditioner.

8. Try Treatments

"Doing conditioning treatments one to two times per week will keep hair healthy and give you nice shine," says Rita Hazan, whose clients include Michelle Williams. Depending on how damaged your hair is, you may need to use a treatment mask twice a week (as opposed to just once).

9. Shine Serums

Rita Hazan, who also works on Jessica Simpson's blonde mane, recommends serums for an instant boost of shine. "If you need a quick fix, there are spray and liquid shine serums that have the same effect—it's just about personal preference," says Hazan. Forgot to replace that empty bottle of product? Olive oil will work in a pinch. Put a little in the palms of your hands and ever-so-lightly glide the hands over the hair, careful not to press into the scalp.

10. Mind Your SPF

Our skin isn't the only thing that can be damaged by the sun. When hair, especially color-treated tresses, undergoes environmental stress, it tends to get dry and brittle. Ted Gibson, who works with Joy Bryant, recommends his hairsheets for damage control. "They contain a UV absorber that helps to block hair from lightening from the sun and other environmental influences."

REVIEW: Gratitude by Zorica of Malibu

Here's one all grapefruit-vanilla lovers will adore!

I've been eyeing this little delight over at the b-glowing wesbite for a while and was thrilled to finally have an opportunity to experience it first hand. It's lovely and it's getting a lot of positive press.

Gratitude is hand made 100% Pure Grapefruit & Vanilla Perfume Oil. This utterly delectable fragrance is chemical and alchohol free. People who can not wear regular fragrance can also enjoy this deliciously feminine scent. The true essence of Gratitude will be experienced by you and those in close proximity to you.

Because it is chemical and alchohol free, Gratitude perfume can be applied on your pulse point more often then regular perfume. Carry it in your purse and experience Gratitude throughout the day.

Made with pure essential oil of Grapefruit and Vanilla. Studies show that Grapefruit essential oil reduces appetite. Also, women wearing Grapefruit essential oil are perceived younger by men. 100% natural. Jojoba and essential oils.

Zorica's success story starts in early 1960, in a small village of former Yugoslavia, when at barely seven years old she created her first face cream. Today even more than ever she is passionate about creating natural products that can help fulfill and empower an individual's life by restoring and rejuvenating the spirit. After her successful modeling career in Milan and London, Zorica found herself in Malibu, California working as a beauty advisor for a European cosmetic company.

In the year 2001, Zorica became chronically ill due to exposure to toxic substances, and was bed ridden for a long time. During her recovery process, she found out that she was not able to use bath or body products that were on the market. Due to her extensive training and experience in skin care, Zorica started creating hear own natural bath and body products without any artificial fragrances or chemical fillers. She was successful in creating superior products without toxic affect. Zorica of Malibu products are ideal for chemical or fragrance sensitive individuals... Zorica believes in freshness; her products are made in small batches.

REVIEW:
Those of you who have read past reviews of mine on fragrance know that I'm not a fan of super-sweet fruity scents. As such, I was pleasantly surprised with Gratitide. Gratitude is a lovely blend of pure grapefruit, vanilla and jojoba oils. That's all there is to it. The aroma is divine. Not at all too sweet, yet vibrantly fragrant of grapefruit with the richness of vanilla. This fragrance denotes "happiness" on first whiff. This is a fragrance that is also easly layered with other fragrances to create your own special blend. I love to do that. I'll often take two, sometimes even three fragrances and spritz/apply them for a totally unique scent all my own. However, that's not to say Gratitude can't be worn alone - it is deliciously fragrant all on its own.

Those who like LaVanila's Grapefruit-Vanilla will find this equally as appealing yet very different in scent. This is a decidedly stronger citrus smell than the former. I adore being able to lavish my skin with pure essential oils, no alcohol, no impurities. As Zorica will tell you, since it doesn't have the alcohol, you may want to apply it more often as the scent won't last as long on the skin as those fragrances with alcohol content. No problem here - it's a treat to apply. At $50 a bottle, it's a wonderful value for fresh, pure, nautral ingredients. I love it!

Zorica, thank you for Gratitude... xo

This Works: Mecca Cosmetics' Q&A with Kathy Phillips

She is the beauty editor’s editor, and has created one of the most awarded global skincare lines, This Works. Kathy Phillips has been the beauty and fashion guru for UK Tatler, The Daily Mail and Sunday Times, spent seven years as Health & Beauty Director at UK Vogue, won numerous international industry awards, and is now International Beauty Director for Vogue, W and Allure in Asia. Mecca Cosmetics shared a few precious minutes with Kathy to find out a little more about the beauty expert behind the brand…

Where did your inspiration for This Works come from?
“I started to have aromatherapy massage when I was pregnant for the first time. The aromatherapy kept me really well, energetic and I have no stretch marks. I was hooked. After that with a big job and a small child the aromatherapy kept me going.”

You are famous for the quality of your essential oils - where do they come from and what is the importance of them?
“We get our oils from all over the world - and they change annually because, like wine, there are good years and bad years for each crop of herbs and flowers. Typically we get Rose from Morocco or Bulgaria, Ravensara from Madagscar, Lavender grown at High Altitude in the South of France, Patchouli from Indonesia and so on. These days we organise for them to be shipped back as an environmental decision.”

What is your daily This Works regime?
“My beauty routine is quite practical really. My luxury is a long bath with aromatherapy oils - In the Zone in the morning or Energy Bank when I need an energy boost. I couldn’t live without This Works Dry Leg Oil - I rub it into my cuticles, legs, arms. I use Active Serum followed by Active Oil for my face, and Clean Skin to cleanse and leave my skin soft - not stripped. It’s just like using an oil cleanser but in a lotion form. I use every bit of my Travel Kit on the plane – never go without it. The bath oils double as perfume - I’m always being asked what I smell of and the Enjoy Really Rich Body Lotion is also a gorgeous smell which leaves a trail of tuberose wherever you go.”

What can we look forward to from This Works in the future?
“We are working on more candles and home scent sprays. For the Skin Care range we are working on a toner and scrubs and a small box of essential skin care items in the form of a starter kit. And we are developing a new fragrance which we will use for bath oils, shower gels, soaps and so on.”

~ excerpted from Mecca Cosmetics' interview with Kathy Phillips

Aerie Fragrance + One Ugly Store Manager

American Eagle Outifitters' Aerie line has a new feminine fragrance out and it is quite delightful. With top notes of flowering quince and green apple, middle notes of watery jasmine and blue freesia and a dry down to sexy, empowering sandalwood and musk, this fragrance is easy to love. Available in the full size spray ($39.50), a sweet little purse-sized atomizer ($15.50), a shimmer cream ($17.50) and a shimmer powder brush ($24.50), we chose the cute little atomizer spritzer.

We refers to my daughter and I. As you know from prior posts, my daughter, 14, has become quite the little connoisseur of fragrances. We enjoy shopping together and trying out new fragrances and beauty items. Usually, we have a fabulous time. Keyword there = usually.

(picture purposely obscured so as not to be too brash)

Meet Ashley

Ashley, we're told by the girl behind the counter, is the Store Manager at our local American Eagle Outfitters in Mandeville. Ashley is bothered by customers in her store. I wonder what made Ashley decide to be a store manager for a retail firm?

On this particular night, we had the pleasure of catching Ashley in an especially horrendous mood. We caught Ashley commiserating with the gal behind the counter, apparently aggravated - about what, who knows. The two, glancing out at the customers from the counter, rolling their eyes, huffing. We tried to stay out of their way.

But it was short-lived. My daughter and I, drawn by the new fragrance in the store after sampling it via a promo card by mail, had our eyes on a purchase. Off we went to the fragrance counter to see which option of the new Aerie fragrance we'd select. Graceful here (that's me) knocked over one of the shimmer powder brushes while trying to reach for the full size bottle of fragrance. Ohhhhh .... that was it! That's all Ashley needed to justify verbal ugliness. She stomped over to us demanding that she "help us" with the fragrances. I was quite capable of picking up the little box that tipped over (no damage done, was in a secured packaged) but she insisted I keep my hands off by grabbing for it herself. She took the bottle I had in my hand away from me and brought it over to the counter. Then she mumbled some curse words and trapsed back to the counter, more venting with her pal at the counter.

The photo above was taken right after she straightened some clothing on the hangers. Her thoughts on that, verbalized out loud to another employee and in earshot of several customers, "Look at this! Can you believe this! Can you believe people act like this!"; add in a few curse words there as well. Yes, seriously. Curse words. Yes, the store manager - in front of adults, teens, children - it didn't matter, Ashley needed the world to know she was "pissed" (her word; yes, hers). These are but a couple of the several such "episodes" we were lucky enough to catch at the good ole AE tonight. It was Ashley's stage and she was determined to give a memorable performance. Nice example to her employees huh? How about this, "Hey Janie and Joe-worker, here's how NOT to act when you're store manager". Or, "Hey, here's a lesson in how to drive customers right out your store, never to return again". They'll not be bothering you anymore.

Not knowing she was store manager, I asked for the SM's name when we checked out (ordinarily I would have refused to buy the item on principle after her rant, but I'd promised my daughter I'd get it ahead of time and it's the only AE in town). She was it, of course - the store manager. She'd only give me Ashley's first name, wouldn't give me who Ashley answered to. That's okay, I've already filed a formal complaint with corporate. I'll let you know how that works out.

In conclusion -- if you're in store for a fabulous, lovely, feminine yet not too sweet scent, check out Aerie's new signature fragrance. Just don't go to the AE in Mandeville to buy it!
