Beautybloggers.org Charity Auction Just in Time for the Holidays

Beautybloggers.org is the brainchild of the fabulous Karla Sugar.  Many of us feel very blessed to have the opportunity to do something we love (whether hobby or career), try the products we try and share that information with those who either take a gander at our blogs or have become regular readers.  In the spirit of giving back, beautybloggers.org was created to progress an avenue to give a little something back to those in need.

BeautyBloggers.org is the collaboration of almost 50 different beauty bloggers and brands. At this holiday time, we wanted to make a meaningful contribution to charity — knowing that the most effective donation to any charity is cash.

So we’re putting our makeup, skincare and other beauty items on the auction block. Winning bids will be donated directly to Doctors Without Borders.

Karla came up with the magnificent thought to make DWB our charity of choice, and I'm delighted to participate in this effort. This organization is committed to bringing quality medical care to people in crisis, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation. They treat rape victims in Papua New Guinea; they make sure women don’t die in childbirth in Pakistan; they helped flood victims in Mexico and earthquake victims in Haiti. They work in 65 countries around the world, and your donation will make an immediate impact. Click here to learn more about Doctors Without Borders.

The auction is live now, and will close on Monday, December 20 at 5 pm CST. We are asking people to register before they can bid. This is simply to try to discourage "spam" bids. Usernames will be public (because the auction shows the username of the current highest bidder), but first name, last name, and email address will be private. They will only be used to contact the winning bidders. And, yes, international bidders are welcome, too!

Now is the time as there are only a few days left.  Pick up great gifts of beauty for those you love donated from over 50 beauty bloggers and beauty companies and feel good knowing your winning bids are going directly to charity.  Click on beautybloggers.org to see all the great options and to place your winning bid. Bloggers will be working hard to get your items shipped to you in time for gift giving. We're not taking a penny of the money. It all goes to charity!

The 3 C's: Estee Lauder Brands Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Awareness

Estée Lauder Companies’ 2010 Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign has launched a bold and provocative campaign theme entitled: Connect. Communicate. Conquer. Prevent Breast Cancer. One Woman at a Time. Wear It. Share It. The Pink Ribbon. This new campaign draws its inspiration from Mrs. Estée Lauder’s “High-Touch” method of reaching consumers through “Telephone, Telegraph, Tell-A-Woman.” Their approach to conquering breast cancer reinterprets this powerful messaging into a philanthropic mission for today’s modern and fast-paced culture.
Today, we are making more progress than ever and reaching more people each year with the message that if localized breast cancer is detected early, it’s 98% curable. While the American Cancer Society estimates more than 1.3 million people worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer, the good news is that mortality rates continue to fall, and we believe this is due in part to better treatments, early detection and greater awareness of the importance of breast health. But we must continue to persist and pursue, and raise as much money for research as possible, to attain what we all believe is possible in our lifetime – a world without breast cancer.

This month, October, 14 of Estée Lauders brands will be selling 20 fabulous beauty products to raise funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF), an independent, not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to funding breast cancer research and currently supports 173 researchers around the world. (To learn more about BCRF, visit www.bcrfcure.org). These wonderful products cover all beauty categories -- Skin care, Makeup, Fragrance and Hair care – and include products from brands such as La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Jo Malone, Aveda, Bumble + Bumble, Lab Series, Origins and more. Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of The Estée Lauder Companies and Founder and Chairman of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, along with celebrity spokesperson Elizabeth Hurley, have also designed special lip collections to raise funds.

Annie Lennox and Alice Temperley Collaborate to Benefit 'The Circle' + Oxfam

Do you love Annie like I love Annie? Do you love Alice like I love Alice?

Well, I love them is all. Both of  'em. Annie and Alice. Alice and Annie. (I think I'm on to something here...)

Anywho, the Annie I refer to is the incomparable songbird Annie Lennox, and Alice is none other than the exquisitely talented fashionista Alice Temperley. Designer Alice Temperley took a new direction with her Temperley London seasonal installation in New York February 2010, reinterpreting some of the late Norman Parkinson’s photographs with the help of photographer Adam Whitehead. The images feature 16 modern British icons who define True British style and glamour – including Annie Lennox, Liberty Ross, Rosamund Pike, Sophie Dahl, Yasmin Le Bon, Laura Bailey and Jacquetta Wheeler.

The resulting images have been printed life size on canvas and then hand-embroidered and embellished with the same techniques used in the collection pieces. The canvases will be auctioned off in London on 18th May 2010 with all proceeds going to ‘The Circle’ who will distribute to an Oxfam project, chosen by Alice in order to support women in West Africa.

Alice was inspired to help fund an Oxfam project after she was invited by Annie Lennox to attend a ‘Circle’ dinner. The Circle is a group of high-profile women who have come together to use their valuable ideas, experience and contacts to give partnership and support to the world’s poorest women. Circle friends include Annie Lennox, Jane Shepherdson, Vanessa Emilien, Vanessa Branson, Livia Firth, Sojin Lee, Beverley Knight, Zoe Ball, Melanie Hall, Maryam D’Abo, Karen Benhamou Ruimy, Alice Temperley and Kim Chappell.

Click here to read the ‘True British’ auction catalogue which includes images of the canvases, statements from both Alice and Annie about the project and an absentee bidding form for the auction.

REWIND: MAC Hello Kitty Soiree, Fashion Fete

Celebrities, designers and many of my blogging beauties gathered at New York City’s Cedar Lake theater on Thursday evening to celebrate M.A.C’s new Hello Kitty color collection (in stores February 12 and online now).

M.A.C’s Hello Kitty has ditched the school supplies and debuted last week as a fiercely stylish, grown-up lioness. In a long tradition of fusing makeup with fashion, M.A.C challenged designers to create one-of-a-kind Hello Kitty–inspired pieces for the event. The designs are being auctioned on eBay with all proceeds benefiting the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

click image for to enlarge for detail

“I didn’t think of Hello Kitty as a little girl; I thought of her more as a woman,” says Catherine Malandrino about her approach in designing this fuchsia frock. “She’s become a big girl with a more glamorous side. I chose to do a silhouette with a lot of waves—a very small waist, more shoulders, and a long curve through the hips.”

Marchesa, Elie Saab and Vincente Villarin had designs represented at the event. Hello Kitty got a dark, glamorous makeover courtesy of Zac Posen’s black-and-pink gown. Hervé Léger’s bandage dress had Hello Kitty flair, thanks to a bright pink ribbon across the bodice. The two faces of Hello Kitty - there's a 'wild kitty' and a 'mild kitty'. Mild Kitty? Well, she’s still wearing the bow, collar, and dress—but somehow Katy England’s Hello Kitty (the mild kitty) seems more sexy than sweet. =)

For more information about M.A.C's Hello Kitty collection, the products and color stories, visit maccosmetics.com or Nordstrom.com.

Macy's Passport 2008: Fashion Cinema

Macy's Passport 2008, commemorating an iconic quarter-century of unparalleled men's, women's and children's fashion, state-of-the art theatrics, celebrity guests and unwavering dedication to our HIV/AIDS community. Since the onset of the AIDS pandemic in the early 1980's, Macy's in steadfast partnership with their sponsors, top designers and community organizations has raised invaluable awareness and over $27 million toward saving lives.

Now in its 26th year, Macy's Passport is the result of fashion and compassion joining forces for the common good. One of the best-loved fashion theatre events in America, it's also one with a big heart.

By 1992, Macy's Passport hit its stride with the 10th Anniversary show featuring supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington on the runway. Swatch, one of the show's sponsors, released a limited-edition watch designed by Vivienne Westwood, sales of which helped triple Passport's previous fundraising efforts. All told, $250,000 was donated to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Shanti Project.

Hollywood embraced the event, and over the years, the celebrities who've graced the stage reads like the "A list": Sharon Stone, Annette Bening, Tyra Banks, Macy Gray, Cindy Crawford, Tina Turner, Will Smith, Liza Minnelli, k.d. lang, Jennifer Lopez, Sean Combs and Mary J. Blige. The best and the brightest names from the world of fashion have also taken Macy's Passport to heart, with Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors lending their talents. Every year Macy's Passport shined causing audience members to wonder how the show could possibly top itself.

But top itself it did! In 2000, Macy's invited a talented musical dance group of Ugandan orphans, to perform at that year's show. It was an obvious and natural partnership to all those involved with Passport. As orphans of AIDS, these young people knew first-hand of the devastation caused by the pandemic; as gifted performers, they understood the talent and presence necessary to capture the stage. With their performance at Macy's Passport, the children electrified the crowd demonstrating the power of the human spirit to transcend adversity and ultimately gain victory over this terrible disease.

In 2007 Passport celebrated its 25th anniversary, surpassing $27 million raised for the HIV/AIDS organizations that serve our local communities. It is in the spirit of Macy's Passport that Macy's continues their mission of AIDS fundraising on a worldwide stage.

For the first time this year the magic of Macy's Passport will be brought to the silver screen. Macy's Passport will be transformed into a high definition cinematic event to be shown across the country, featuring special celebrity and musical entertainment and showcasing all the excitement of the live Passport events. Macy's Passport : Fashion Cinema expands Macy's commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS. In each city, Macy's will host a screening party with all proceeds benefiting a local HIV/AIDS organization. Attendees will also enjoy a pre-show reception and receive an exclusive Macy's shopping discount.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.

This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.

· Women age 65 and older are less likely to get mammograms than younger women, even though breast cancer risk increases with age.

· Hispanic women have fewer mammograms than Caucasian women and African American women.

· Women below poverty level are less likely than women at higher incomes to have had a mammogram within the past two years.

· Mammography use has increased for all groups except American Indians and Alaska Natives.

“The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely – once is not enough.”

For more information about NBCAM, please visit www.nbcam.org. For additional information, please call one of the following toll-free numbers: American Cancer Society, (800) 227-2345, National Cancer Institute (NCI), (800) 4-CANCER, Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, (800) 221-2141.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month program is dedicated to increasing public knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Fifteen national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies comprise the Board of Sponsors, who work together to ensure that the NBCAM message is heard by thousands of women and their families.

Bright ideas for the clinic, the workplace, and the community

Throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month's (NBCAM's) history, Program Leaders have developed many creative ways to reach women. This section provides BRIGHT IDEAS to reach women in the clinic, at the workplace, and in the community. Some of these ideas may work for you or inspire new thoughts. NBCAM's educational campaign, "Pass the Word," consists of communication initiatives to facilitate a woman's decision to engage in early detection of breast cancer. As program leaders, you can help women and the community understand the importance of a triad of behaviors that includes mammography screening, clinical breast exams performed by health care providers, and breast self-examination.

At the Workplace
Women make up more than 50 percent of the American workforce. Approximately 44 percent of those diagnosed with cancer will be employed at the time of their diagnosis. Chances are some of those women are employees at your workplace.

The NBCAM Board of Sponsors urges all employers to examine the health care benefits they provide their employees and to take the steps needed to provide significant benefits for mammography screening.

Workplace Successes
  • All District of Columbia government employees received a breast cancer message on their pay stubs.
  • In Mississippi, McDonald's restaurants printed tray liners with a mammography message and a toll-free information line.
  • Information flyers were mailed out in Avon catalogs and to food stamp recipients in Montana. In Albuquerque, NM, the local ValPak coupon package was mailed to every house within a designated ZIP code, carrying an insert on breast cancer early detection, along with valuable coupons from local vendors.
  • A Wal-Mart pharmacy in North Olmsted, OH, put information in each prescription bag during October. They also ran announcements on their PA system and made sure employees were informed, as well.
  • Lands' End, located in southwest Wisconsin, employs 5,000-8,000 individuals, depending on the season. After realizing there were no adequate support groups in the southwest region of Wisconsin, one employee and breast cancer survivor started an entirely voluntary support group with 30 members called the Lands' End "Breast Friends."As soon as an employee is diagnosed with breast cancer,"Breast Friends" sends a mail or phone message encouraging them to participate. There are between 15-20 women each month who meet. The group also sponsors and particapates in breast cancer awareness activities annually.
  • AstraZeneca began an in-house breast cancer screening program, beginning in 1989. Employee participation in the program, which also includes educational activities and clinical breast examinations, is more than 90 percent, exceeding national averages of about 30 percent. Some of the major "selling points" among employees are familiarity with medical staff, the ease of getting an appointment during the work day, and the feeling of being cared for by a staff committed to breast health.

Ellen for the Cure

Ellen for the CureThe Ellen DeGeneres Show is celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by announcing the return of the Ellen for the Cure campaign!

Throughout October, Ellen is asking her audience members and viewers to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. 100 percent of all donations will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

To participate, click here.

Throughout the month of October, For the Love of Beauty will highlight numerous programs to support raising awareness and will host giveaways galore from sponsors eager to get their message out about this important issue. Stay tuned all month and be on the lookout for a fab giveaway coming up before the end of the day! xo
