MAC Euristocrats 2 - All about the Lips

Admittedly, I'm a lipstick-lipgloss whore. I can never have too many pinks, reds, neutrals, etc. You'll find them, and in multiples, in all my handbags, my vanity, drawers in the bathroom, makeup bags, travel cases, desk drawers and even some still in the bags they came in when I bought them. So when I see MAC putting out even more lippies in a second Euristocrats collection, I go all tingly inside.

Their inspiration? The top shades of the continent. Lipsticks custom-tuned to fit the style moods of the European hot spots, plus six hot new Dazzleglass shades to add the sheen, the sparkle, and the ooh-la-la factor that never fails to entertain. They're the "something extra" added to the collection Euristocrats can't get enough of. More, more, more!

ShopSmart: Can Caffeine Give Skin a Lift?

Caffeine can now be found in hundreds of cosmetic and skin-care items. Some manufacturers claim their products can take away under-eye puffiness or dark circles; others promise to smooth away cellulite. Sounds good, but do they work? ShopSmart, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, got the lowdown on what caffeinated products can and can’t do for you from a group of experts and researchers, including dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Here's what they learned:

BODY SCRUBS

The claims: Bella Luccè claims that its Bali Kopi Coffee Scrub, $25.50, will exfoliate and smooth lumpy skin; OPI claims its Cappuccino Massage and Espresso Scrub Kit, $23, will stimulate cell turnover.

Experts say: You’ll see softer, smoother skin, thanks to the exfoliating capabilities of the coffee grounds, but you don’t get enough penetration to tighten skin.

Bottom line: Though store-bought exfoliators work, don’t toss out your own coffee grounds! Recycle them as a home-made scrub. Just add a little olive oil to make a paste.

CELLULITE CREAMS AND GELS

The claims: Bliss Love Handler, $36, Revitol Cellulite Solution, $40, and Clarins Super Restorative Redefining Body Care, $88, stimulate skin and improve firmness, reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Experts say: To see a payoff, caffeine must be able to penetrate the skin cells, and some preliminary evidence is intriguing.

Bottom line: These products are effective only as long as they are being used, and it generally takes four to five weeks to see any difference.

EYE CREAMS

The claims: Products such as Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Eye Roller, $13, Kiehl’s Eye Alert, $21, and Lancôme High Potency Daily Moisturizing Eye Treatment, $36, reduce dark circles and puffiness.

Experts say: If puffiness is the result of water retention, a caffeinated eye cream might help dehydrate the area. As for those dark circles, the deeper they are, the less likely it is that they will disappear. Caffeine’s ability to constrict blood vessels can help, but it only works on the skin’s outermost layer.

Bottom line: Don’t expect miracles, but you will probably get an immediate tingling or cooling sensation, and you might notice that bags look less severe and under-eye circles might appear a bit lighter over time.

FACE CREAMS

The claims: Products such as Murad Environmental Defense Kit, $82, and Topix Replenix Cream CF, $63, are supposed to protect skin against premature aging and reduce redness.

Experts say: Caffeine might improve the look of your skin and protect it from sun damage, but you should still use sunscreen. Recent studies have found that caffeine might also help sunscreens and antioxidant ingredients in skin creams work longer and more effectively. And there are no known negative effects of applying caffeine to your skin.

Bottom line: Applying a skin cream containing caffeine every morning before you head out into the sun might not be a bad idea—but those creams are super pricey!

The colors are just perfect for fall, don't you think?

Chris Benz x Lancôme: Pout-à-Porter Lipstick Collection Continues

Lancôme is thrilled to announce they're bringing back the Pout-à-Porter Lipstick series!

The previous four lipsticks in this collection were collaborations with celebrated designers Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, Peter Som and Thakoon. Thakoon's Pixel Pink and Peter Som's P.S. Kiss were my two personal favorites, though all four of them received lots of love from the beauty blogging community and from editorial print. All four of the lipsticks sold out in their heyday, and one Proenza Pink lipstick even sold for $122.50 on eBay.

For Spring 2010 Lancôme is collaborating with emerging designer Chris Benz and they want your help! They're doing a lipstick naming contest that was announced on Chris Benz’s Facebook fan page today and they're spreading the word to all the beauty blogging readers. The new shade will be inspired by Chris’ Spring 2010 collection and will be worn by the models at his show in September. The contest winner will receive five of the lipsticks plus a $500 Lancôme gift certificate. All you have to do is post your name suggestion on Chris’ Facebook fan page based on what you know about Chris and his fashion personality.

Waste no time as the deadline for submissions is Sunday, July 12th, at 5 p.m. EST.

REVIEW: Rare El'ements International Haircare

Rare El'ements Hair Collection announces its entry into an age of sophisticated style - a fresh perspective on professional haircare; one that maintains a high level of performance without the use of harsh sulfates, silicones, synthetic enhancers and toxic parabens. Their claim: they've captured the raw unspoiled wealth of nature and have developed three easy steps to recovering and preventing signs of aging hair.

With Rare El'ements, the creators have taken the daily routine of hairwashing and turned it into a luxurious, pampering experience. John Amato and Teri LaVerne (a former fashion model) have 18 years in the salon owning business in upscale Beverly Hills. Together they wanted to create professional haircare products that truly repaired hair from damaging effects of age, chemical processing, and styling as well as incorporate raw, natural ingredients to nourish and condition hair, providing their customers with a luxurious aromatic experience. They've dedicated themselves to the pursuit and creation of a collection that repairs damaged hair and doesn't just mask it by coating it with synthetic enhancers.

The result: a collection that enhances shine, preserves color, hydrates, nourishes and repairs hair.

What you'll find in Rare El'ements is a sophisticated, refined, effective approach to restoring and protecting your hair. Rare El'ements contains pure botanicals, exotic butters and nourishing nut oils from the world's most opulent, raw resources.

So, sounds lovely enough. I was eager to try the shampoo and conditioner in particular to see if the results lived up to all the dreamy sounding hype. They do! Not only is the experience of using the highly aromatic, creamy shampoo and densely rich conditioner akin to a professional spa experience, but the results are spot on. After a week of use (I wash every other day), my hair feels soft, is shiny, healthy looking, full of volume and smells fantastic. I'm splendidly enamored with this line and will continue to use it. I'm hard to please when it comes to haircare. My scalp is very sensitive to intense perfumes and can become "flaky" when harsh products are used. Secondly, since I color my hair, I'm always cognizant of wanting to use products that will conserve that color while also rendering soft, manageable locks. It goes without need of mention that my haircare products must appeal to my olfactory sense. Rare El'ements succeeds in all categories. I highly recommend it!

SPECIFICS ABOUT THE PRODUCTS

Pure Shampoo Hydrating Hair Bath

The rich luscious lather (yes, there's a lather, some purely organic devotees will shake a finger; not me) gently bathes and hydrates hair with rare ingredients souces from Italy and Japan, effectively removing product build-up, while preventing over-cleansing or drying. Key ingredients include: Kalahari oil, an African watermelon seed oil that naturally dissolves sebum build-up, moisture balancing Black Seed Oil that contains 15 amino acids and both Rosehip and Marula oils in addition to other essential oils and botanicals.

Essential Conditioner Daily Replenishing Spa Therapy

This rich conditioner repairs and rebuilds each strand of hair with moisture drenching rainforest butters native to Nepal and Brazil, pure botanicals, nourishing nut oils and the energy-giving aroma of natural, essential fragrances. Effective in hydrating and repair, the conditioner does not weigh hair down; it renders gorgeous, full, healthy, shiny hair without silicones and parabens. Key ingredients include: Cupuacu Butter, a creamy rainforest butter that replenishes moisture and offers a natural UVA/UVB protection, Phulwara Butter, Abyssinian, Camelina, Baobob, Marula, Meadowfoam, Rosehip and Macadamia oils.

Pre-Shampoo Rejuvenating Hair and Scalp Serum

A rich formulation of exotic botanicals, pure nut oils and essential aroma fragrances ideal for damaged or color treated hair. Some label it the "miracle" serum for its ability to instantly repair the condition and shine of dull lifeless hair. Every opulent drop holds the secret to rebuilding and promoting stronger, healthier hair growth, replenishing vital nutrients and moisture lost to everyday styling and chemical services. Key ingredients include: omega-3 rich Camelina, Baobob, Marula oil, Borage, Meadowfoam, Avocado, Macadamia, Shea Butter and Rosehip Oil.

Now, these are not drugstore products, and not drugstore prices. The shampoo retails for $34, the conditioner $44 and the rejuvenating treatment serum $44. As such, I'll be using them sparingly when I really want to treat myself. Welllll .... maybe not. I don't think I really want to wait to use this again - ha! Rare El'ements is available through Luckyscent, Vert Los Angeles and other specialty boutiques.

Shades of Gray ~ Nail Trend for Winter 2010

Rumor has it gray, and all shades of it, will be the "it" shade for nails come winter. We've already seen hints of popularity here and there over the past winter, but it will rise again and in full glory this winter. I for one am ecstatic about this. I adore gray; it's flattering to most anyone and if done well can easily take you from daytime professional to chic night-on-the-towner without any changes. You can also expect to see taupes (shimmers and mattes) thrown in the mix of grays for the season as well. Can't wait to bring you more as time ensues.

Bloom Cosmetics introduced two brand new limited-edition gray shades to their burgeoning polish collection, and they are both stunning to wear.

Agyness - Finish: High Shine Matte
A moody hue for your winter style, paint your nails with Agyness (yes, named for the high fashion model herself), a limited edition splash of matte, industrial, concrete grey.

Alexa - Finish: Intense Shimmer
Indulge in a touch of gothic glamour with limited edition Alexa, a shimmery, gunmetal grey.

With pigments sourced from around the world, a professional two-coat formula and a 330-strand brush, Bloom's nail polish claims to hold its color and shine for days.

Also, if you're following, Bloom just finalized the votes for their You Choose the Nail Polish contest and the winning polishes will be available in October 2009. The winning shades are Pistachio and Neon Purple.

Find Agyness and Alexa for $15 each at Bloom Cosmetics. They are hyper-popular so are prone to sell-out. Contact them by email for notification if they're not there when you want them. More on this trend soon ... x

Carol's Daughter Pops-Up in New Orleans!

Mayor Ray Nagin, ok - "RayNay" to those of us down south, has dubbed July 1st as Carol's Daughter Day and the brand is taking New Orleans by storm in order to celebrate. Does this have a familiar ring? They've done this before and it's been a huge hit each time. There will be celebrity guests, activities and events throughout the week in honor of their efforts to make New Orleans a better place. All for it!

Just in time for the Fourth of July Music Festival, Carol’s Daughter will be opening its fifth annual Pop-Up Store in New Orleans. From July 1st to July 5th, Carol’s Daughter fans will be able to shop their favorite store in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Designed to replicate existing Carol’s Daughter boutiques, the temporary location will feature an array of celebrity appearances, in-store specials and events, product giveaways and more. Founder Lisa Price will also be at the store, where consumers will have the opportunity to hear her story and learn about how her love of fragrances helped lead her to where she is today.

Carol’s Daughter is Lisa Price, a woman whose passion for fragrance led her into the kitchen to create products with good for you ingredients for her friends and family. Inspired by the delicious recipes and irresistible smells from her Nana’s kitchen, Lisa’s creations all begin with a beautiful fragrance and the best ingredients. The homespun line has expanded to include a full range of hair care and body care products as well as Lisa’s signature fragrances.

Guest Spot: At Home Beauty Treatments with Mario Badescu's Kelly B

By Kelly B, a professional Beauty Consultant with Mario Badescu Skin Care.

At the beginning of the week I have all kinds of good intentions to eat healthy and clean and my counters and fridge are filled with lots of wonderful fruits and veggies and visions of a healthier, more fit me. If you’re on a tight budget and hate to throw food away like I do, try these at home beauty treatments with the leftover produce that took the back seat to Chinese food and Taco Bell.

TOMATO MASK - So simple. Great for oily skin. Crush it up and apply it to the face for 20 minutes. You can even add a mashed cucumber and the juice. Rinse with tepid water. Probably best to be laying down on the couch on a towel under your head with some good tunes and a glass of nice antioxidant red wine. Chianti, perhaps? Don’t do this mask if you have openly erupted pimples and careful not to get any in your eyes! (Yikes. That would sting)

SIMPLE OILY SKIN MASK -- whip an egg white along with a teaspoon lemon juice. Apply to face for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly. This one is great for tightening the pores.

BANANA MASK -- Here’s another yummy treat for your face. This one is for dry or dehydrated skin, compliments of the man himself, Mr. Mario Badescu (RIP). Mash a medium banana with one tablespoon of honey and 20 drops of fresh lemon juice until it’s somewhat smooth. Apply to face and neck for 20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and follow with your normal moisturizer. May I suggest sticking with the food theme and going with the Mario Badescu Honey Moisturizer?

Obviously you’re not always going to be in the mood to make your own face mask, even if it as simple as opening up a jar from the grocery store and throwing it on your face. In that case, try to stick with the simplest formulations that have the least amount of preservatives and unnatural ingredients. Also, use the proper products for your skin type. There is no one-size-fits-all skin care to exfoliate or fight acne. Read labels and educate yourself about what you are putting in and on your body. Have fun trying these simple skin care recipes out, and good luck!

Shea Yeleen - Shea Butter with a Double Purpose

We all know about the miracle properties of shea butter; that it is an extraordinarily effective moisturizer for dry skin, eliminates stretch marks, promotes cell renewal and even helps protect skin from harmful UV rays. But not many people know the amazing story of how shea butter is actually created---by the hands of women living in Africa's embattled regions, who labor for hours on end to produce this highly sought after ingredient for mere pennies a day.

Shea Yeleen International, a non-profit organization, has set a goal nothing short of a miracle in itself. Not only is it their mission to organize and train women in the villages of Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Mali to produce high quality natural shea butter, SYI uses this shea butter as the main component in a decadent and high quality body care line that they make available for sale to the western world. Fifty percent of the profits go right back to these African communities to further empower these women to sustain livings and provide for their families.

Rahama Wright, Shea Yeleen's Executive Director came up with the idea to create the nonprofit organization while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the poorer regions of rural West Africa. "I've always been interested in poverty issues and in Africa," Wright, who's mother's side of the family is from Ghana, explains. "By living and working in Africa, I became inspired by the women there who have these tremendous challenges in terms of poverty, but at the same time, have so much beauty and joy and inner strength." Just last November, Wright's efforts led her to become one of 80 winners in the first-ever leadership training contest spearheaded by Oprah: Women Rule! O's White House Leadership Project Contest (3,000 women applied).

Imagine that you are a woman in a small rural village in West Africa, struggling financially to care for your family. Following a tradition handed down by your mother, you produce shea butter, oil found in the nut of the shea fruit, as a means to make money. To process the shea butter, you start with a five kilometer walk to harvest the fruit and then follow a labor intensive process of hand extracting that takes up to 20 hours to produce 2-4 kilograms of oil. You sell a portion of the shea oil on the local market for 20 cents a kilogram. It is not very much money, yet to you it is better than nothing.

What if you knew about an international demand for the very product you labor to produce? On the international market, thousands of different kinds of cosmetics products are made using shea butter, and sold for $10-$60 for a few ounces. However, you do not have access to this market even though the natural resource originates several kilometers from where you live. What if this could change?

"Women in rural West Africa are the creators of shea butter, and it makes sense to join the popularity of shea butter and natural products to the need for women producers in rural Africa to overcome poverty- it's a win-win situation because consumers receive the best shea butter product that will nourish their skin, and women receive above market rates for their shea butter. As we begin to expand, we will demonstrate that transforming the skincare market can also transform communities," said Rahama Wright, Executive Director of Shea Yeleen International.

They instantly moisturize even very dry skin and I've fast become a fan for keeping my hands and arms smooth and moisturized. Skin is left with a healthy glow and lips are hydrated and supple. I've tried an amber body balm and a lavender honeysuckle butter, both of which are subtle in scent - fresh without being overpowering. They've newly introduced two varieties of hand-crafted shea butter soaps in their offerings, lavender and lemongrass. I'm hoping to try those soon. Such wonderful products, such a fabulous giving back to the communities that produce them - that's a winning situation all around! And, you can't beat the prices for the quality. What a fantastic project.

Lancôme: Declaring Indigo Fall 2009 Collection

This morning in Paris, the Lancôme makeup team unveiled their Fall 2009 color collection, Declaring Indigo. Created by Lancôme Artistic Director Aaron De Mey, this collection celebrates Paris in all its vibrancy. Aaron chose shades that represent the glamour, the energy and the passion of Paris —indigo blue, bright red and luxurious gold. I'm such an indigo fan to begin with and these blues are stunning! As a green-eyed girl, the color indigo really helps to brighten my eyes and make the green pop. 'Tis why my favorite eyelid crease contour shade is indigo or lapis and why my favorite eyeliner is Lancôme's own Artliner Pen in Blueberry. Tres magnifique!

Lancôme debuted a few key shades during Fashion Week. At Chris Benz, all three Le Vernis nail colors were showcased: Golden Audacity, Indigo Paris and Rouge Liberty. Lancôme spokesmodel Daria Werbowy is the face of the collection. She was photographed by Mario Sorrenti for the ad.

Nordstrom has a limited-edition Declaring Indigo Brush and Makeup Bag Beauty Exclusive Set and an exclusive Declaring Indigo Virtuose Mascara Set both available for pre-order now.

Declaring Indigo will be available for sale starting in August. For more images of the products, visit my fellow blogger A Touch of Blusher. She's got some nice detailed shots of the shadow, polishes and the lippies. Shop Nordstrom (check out their Beauty Exclusives section) for more on the pre-order opportunity and watch for more news about the soon-to-be-released Declaring Indigo collection at Lancôme online.
