Aveda Rocks the Braid Trend at Jason Wu's Decidely Parisian-Aired Resort 2011 Collection

It's all in the details at Jason Wu Resort 2011 so on each guest's chair sat a box of macaroons made by Alain Ducasse's restaurant Adour, downstairs at the St. Regis Hotel, New York.

"Resort should be like dessert," Swarovski Womenswear Award nominee Jason Wu said. Specifically, a French one apparently as a Parisian flavor floated through his collection; from the Coco-esque straw boaters to the tweedy skirtsuits to the sailor-stripe sweaters and full menswear pants, it was there. On the garçon-ish side of the equation, Wu had a couple of the shorts suits that have quickly turned into a big Resort trend reported Style.com's Nicole Phelps.

Master Stylist Jenn Chiminiello at Aveda Vandam Street Lifestyle Salon in New York City, created an updated braid using Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray (launching the month) at the Jason Wu Resort 2011 show in New York.

“The Jason Wu hair look for Resort 2011 is a slightly tousled, modernized braid that is both innocent and sexy. The freshness of the braid complements the romantic florals and pretty plaids in Jason’s collection.”
—Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda

HOW TO GET THE LOOK
1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Brilliant™ Damage Control™ to add shine and protect hair from the hazards of heat styling. Then massage Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam from roots to ends to add body. Blow-dry with a round brush, curling the ends of hair under as you dry.

2. Use a comb to create a messy part wherever hair parts naturally. For extra volume at the crown, backcomb the roots with a fine-toothed comb.

3. Divide hair into two side sections and one back section. Create a tight braid with the back section of hair and secure at the end with a clear elastic band.

4. Take the left section of hair and lace through the braid, securing at the bottom with a clear elastic band, on top of the elastic already holding the braid. Repeat with right section of hair.

5. For layered hair, take any flyway pieces near the front of the face and secure with bobby pins at each side of the braid, behind the ears. Secure other loose strands into the braid as needed.

6. Finish by spraying the braid liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray to keep hair steadily in place.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Jason’s collection was inspired by the look of the dewy pixie girls who graced the covers of 1960’s fashion magazines. The updated braid we created for the show reflects that fresh and youthful feel.” —Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This style looks pretty and fresh for daytime and super romantic for evening. To keep the look from going flat, apply Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to damp hair, massaging from roots to ends, and blow dry with a round brush. Then divide hair into two side sections and one back section. Create a tight braid with the back section of hair, securing with an elastic. Wrap pieces of hair from each side through the braid, securing with an elastic at the bottom of the braid. To keep the style in place, spray liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.” —Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda.

Who else rocks the braided look?  My own baby girl!  Here she is braided and ready for the pool party she went to Saturday night, a "Sweet 16" b'day party if I'm not mistaken.  Wish my phone camera took better photo detail as she did such a great job styling, but you get the idea nonetheless.

Aveda's Latest Pictorial Is Sublime

Eighties goth. Nineties grunge. Eternal beauty.

Sublime, the latest collection from Aveda’s VP Creative Director Antoinette Beenders, is inspired by music, culture and the iconic personalities from the late 20th century.

“This is punk beautified, raw and hardcore at the foundation, refined and elegant in its interpretation,” Beenders says. “We used opposing notions to present past ideas in a new way."  "It is often the case in culture, that what’s old becomes new again," Beenders continues. "Strong shapes, rough styling and matte finishing mingle in this collection to exude a raw yet sophisticated sex appeal. " "We cut classic silhouettes bluntly, and the makeup is intense, but done in a really beautiful way," Beenders says. "Sleek black-and-white clothing against a white background lends a freshness and vigor to the imagery.”

Beenders invites you to regard Sublime as an invitation to rethink the past—to find inspiration in unexpected places and to use your own experience as fuel for imagination. Lead artists from Aveda’s global network produce trend collections twice per year. Taking global hair trends from runway to real life, collection techniques are taught to the Aveda network in workshops around the world, providing Aveda stylists, colorists and makeup artists the opportunity to hone technical skills and explore their own creative expression.

Says Beenders, “Texture and bold color are back in a major way. What a wonderful opportunity to reinvent ourselves, return to fundamental skills and find new ways to create! I am challenging the network to rediscover their artistic voice."

Aveda Gives a Hand to Breast Cancer Research

As has been Aveda's tradition since 2004, this year Aveda is again raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) by selling their limited edition, 150ml/5oz tube (a 19% increase in size with a 7% savings for guests) of Hand Relief.

Aveda's hand cream is an incredibly rich moisture therapy. It soothes
dry hands, leaving them noticeably softer and smoother. Hydrating plant
emollients, humectants, exfoliating fruit acids and anti-oxidants—including
vitamins A and E—help diminish signs of aging and provide optimal relief. It has
a lovely fresh scent.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder and dedicated to funding clinical and genetic research on breast cancer at medical institutions across the globe. During the month of October, Aveda will donate $4 from the sale of each Breast Cancer Awareness Hand Relief to the BCRF to help advance the understanding of environmental links to breast cancer.

Help a very worthy cause and enjoy wonderful hand care simultaneously. BCA limited edition Hand Relief will retail for $21 and will be available for purchase through the month of October at Aveda online and through their salons, spas and institutes.

REVIEW: Aveda Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lipcolor

Plump lips

When I first learned that Aveda was launching a hydrating, plumping lipstick, I was ecstatic! I really adore Aveda as a cosmetics line and many of my favorite lippies have come from them over the years. Two of my favorite shades have, of course, been discontinued (Sweet Petunia and Plum Orellano) so I needed to find a good replacement.

One thing I've always wished was a little different about Aveda lipsticks is that they can go on a bit chaulky. The result of the pigment on the lips is gorgeous, that's not the issue. It's more the way it actually feels going on the lips that lends itself to lack of smoothness. So when the news came out about Nourish-Mint, I was psyched to try it out.

The only real trick was selecting a color. There are 21 colors to choose from in the categories of peach, pink, rose, earth, plum, spice and nude. I went with Stargrape, one of the plum shades. It's beautiful!

Key ingredients:

Coconut, raspberry, pomegranate, bilberry, and certified organic spearmint and vanilla.

The benefits include a noticeably fuller lip, smoothing appearance of fine lines, increased moisture, refreshing organic spearmint and vanilla flavor and, of course, being as Earth conscious as Aveda is, the new packaging reduces waste by about 33%. Good news!

Review: Wonderful! I really like that the lipstick glides on a lot more smoothly than their previous formulas have. Still the same pleasant flavor, the gorgeous, rich color, the benefits of the ingredients as it does hydrate and create a fuller lip. I can't say I'm really noticing a whole lot of "plumping", but the rest makes this formualtion a definite winner in my book. At $14 a tube, it's comparable to other lippies and I like the "good for you" benefit!

AVEDA: Beauty Is As Beauty Does

Aveda would like you to discover how they connect their mission with product development by sourcing ingredients from traditional communities around the world. There is just so very much to learn about how Aveda takes careful steps and measures to give back in creating quality products for us, that it's really not feasible to encompass all the information here. I encourage you to gain more insight, it's definitely worth reading, by clicking here for their website.

Continuing our green theme for the month, I'd like to make you aware of at least a small portion of how Aveda is actively performing its mission. Today we'll look at how they're sourcing some of their ingredients.

BEAUTY FROM A WOUNDED EARTH

South African Rose Geranium

Of the 30 farms in South Africa who grow, harvest and distill the plant for Aveda, two farms in particular stand out. The farms of Dysseldorp are owned by the community and worked by men and women from the local town. By farming the rose geranium, families build a sustainable business on their land, and bring money closer to their communities. Not far from Dysseldorp, the town of Vaalwater is a tightly-knit community of approximately 300 people, of whom 75 are employed by the local farm. The land had been used to farm tobacco for many years, but its new owners, Tanya and Rupert, have transformed it into an organic rose geranium farm and essential oil distillery. Because an organic farm is more labor-intensive, they are able to employ more people, thus bringing in more resources for the community. They continue to struggle with the remnants of apartheid. Rose geranium flowers serve as hope for these families, who have lived on the land for hundreds of years. All of the income from the farm goes directly into the community, building better schools and houses, and bringing home care and counseling for the 1 in 4 of the adult population struggling with HIV. As their business grows, hope grows from the wounded Earth. Read more about South African Rose Geranium sourcing here.

Amazonian Babassu

In the eastern Amazonian region of Brazil, women gather after morning chores to collect nuts from lush new-growth babassu (bob-ah-sue) palms, carrying their harvests in woven baskets to shade trees, where they sit and break the hard shells with a stick over ax blades adjusted to their legs. The women are from Indigenous and local communities that have occupied the Maranhão region of Brazil for over four centuries. They call themselves quebradeiras de coco—"coconut breakers". Their world was not always peaceful. Twenty years ago, vast sections of forest were burned and cleared for cattle ranching and the people were forced, often violently, from the land. Joining with environmental groups, the babassu nut breakers successfully lobbied local and federal officials to prohibit the clear-cutting of the palm forests, and to protect their rights. These local collectives, have been partners with Aveda for six years. Aveda has taken certified organic babassu as a starting point to create a cleansing ingredient—known as babassu betaine—that is richly foaming. We are able to buy babassu directly from the women's collectives. This means we don't have to go through conglomerate importers and middleman companies that could usurp Native interests. In turn, we know exactly where our certified organic babassu is coming from—knowledge that assures us that our high standards of integrity are met. Ingredient purity can be traced to source, to harvests that don't harm the land or the people. Read more about sourcing Amazonian Babassu here.

Australian Sandalwood

Today, most sandalwood available on the market has been poached in India, sometimes by organized gangs who also poach elephants. Aveda's quest for the Earth's purest, finest organic sandalwood oil that can be traceably sourced has taken us on a journey where the sandalwood is sustainably harvested and where the oil extraction process uses steam instead of petrochemical solvents. The difference—in quality and sustainability—benefits beauty professionals, consumers, indigenous communities and the Earth. More than two hundred years ago, the Europeans first arrived in Australia with their heavy suitcases. For a hundred years, countless Aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their families, deprived of their native culture, and converted to European cultural and religious lifestyles. In 1976 the Aboriginal Land Rights Act opened the way for the native people to find their rightful path again. Today, Aveda and the Indigenous Communities of Mardu Peoples of Kuktabubba have a strong business partnership. Aveda has also joined hands with Mount Romance, the Australian-headquartered producers of sandalwood oil, to extract the sandalwood oil by steam instead of petrochemical solvents. Brazilian Uruku - A Celebration of Color

The small village of Nova Esperanca sits on a red-dirt cliff on the banks of the Gregorio River in the Western edge of Brazil's Amazon rainforest. Its members are the custodians of the precious urukum trees. Their story is a painting of the human spirit and a colorful tradition of rich culture. Nova Esperanca is surrounded by vibrant rainforests growing the urukum plant, a bushy tree that stretches nine feet tall and produces spiky red or green pods. If you open a pod with your thumbs you find a collection of small red seeds hugged together. Each of these seeds is filled with a deep orange pigment known as urukum, or, Bixa Orellana. Squeeze the seeds in your hands and your fingers become paintbrushes, giving brilliant color to whatever you touch. The Aveda Yawanawa partnership is very special. In 1992, Aveda founder, Horst Rechelbacher and anthropologist May Waddington started a partnership to create a urukum tree plantation that would help the Yawanawa to sustain themselves. Aveda's research chemists discovered that the urukum pigment harvested by the Yawanawa was ideal for creating superior lip color. The work of preserving their homelands from possible destruction due to logging and or conversion to ranching, Aveda believes is a model for all people, in this world's fight against loss of biodiversity, mitigation of climate change and ensuring basic human rights.
