Lancome Introduces Supermodel Spokesperson

Arlenis Sosa, the fashion world's newest supermodel joins the Lancôme family.

The Cinderella story of Arlenis Sosa continues as the fledgling supermodel has joined Lancôme as a spokesperson. Sosa, 19, who comes from the Dominican Republic , was discovered earlier this year and immediately began working with the likes of Steven Meisel and Craig McDean for American Vogue, Italian Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and other top fashion publications.

“Arlenis possesses beauty, intelligence, charm and compassion,” says Lancôme President Odile Roujol. “All of our brand ambassadors share these attributes, so we knew she would be a wonderful addition. We are very proud to welcome her to the Lancôme family.”

Ms. Sosa’s fellow spokespeople include Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet, Juliette Binoche, Clive Owen, Daria Werbowy, Laura Morante, Selena Breed, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann and Inès Sastre. Advertising featuring Arlenis will appear in 2009.

“I feel so honored and lucky,” says Sosa. “Lancôme is an amazing brand so this is a dream come true.”

Arlenis was a student majoring in communications and doing charitable work with her church on behalf of those living with diabetes when a local designer spotted her and sent her photo to a friend at the Marilyn Agency in New York . She flew to the city–her first time out of the Dominican Republic –and the agency signed her on the spot. At 5’11, with sparkling eyes and one of the most beautiful smiles in the industry, Sosa quickly captivated editors and photographers alike. She will make her catwalk debut during New York ’s Spring 2009 Fashion Week and will appear on the runways of more than a dozen designers, including Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Proenza Schouler, Zac Posen, Narciso Rodriguez, Anna Sui, Tommy Hilfiger, Peter Som and Rag & Bone. Whew ... that's some lineup!

Congratulations, Arlenis! xo

Welsh Songstress Duffy Has an Eye for Fashion

Duffy in a Charlotte Ronson silk minidress

Duffy, Welsh singer-songwriter with a love for fashion, spoke with WWD recently. Promoting Nivea and scheduled to grace the stage at the upcoming Fashion Rocks concert (recent post here) in Manhattan tomorrow night, the beauty gives readers a glimpse into her soulful, seductive side. Excerpts below:

... In her native Britain, Welsh-born singer Duffy is fast becoming known for bringing a soulful, retro sound loaded with impassioned, lovelorn lyrics to the country’s music scene. When she released her Northern Soul-inflected single “Mercy” — a fusion of horns, strings and tinkling percussion — in February, that single and her subsequent album, “Rockferry,” shot to the top of the U.K.’s music charts. “Rockferry” later hit number four on the U.S. Billboard chart.

And appropriately for an artist who’s made an equally strong statement with her blonde, back-combed hair and monochrome duds, the singer will round off her U.S. tour experience by playing Fashion Rocks. Duffy won’t yet reveal which of her numbers she’ll unleash on the audience. “I’m doing one track, but we don’t know what we’re going to do yet, it’s not set in stone,“ she says.

And while the singer’s style and sound — along with her moniker, which she takes from her surname — have led to comparisons with one of Britain’s most famous soul exports, Dusty Springfield, Duffy insists that her image is all her own. “I know what I do and do not like. I don’t think clothes should define you, I think they should just enhance your character. I sort of apply that rule to what I do,” she says. “I’ve always loved...vintage, I’m really into the Forties and Fifties, that’s my favorite era, so stylish and cut really well, and it’s kind of very feminine.”

For the singer’s Fashion Rocks performance, she’ll appear as a brand ambassador for Nivea, for which she’s appeared in a series of print ads to mark the concert. Later, some of her tracks will also appear in Nivea television spots.

And belying her thus-far brief moment in the spotlight, she says she’s already au fait with the mugging for the camera that being a spokeswoman demands. “In the beginning, there’s a part of you that thinks, ‘This wasn’t what I thought it was all about,’ you know, but [now] I think that it’s just good fun,” she says. “At the beginning, I used to be really afraid of the camera, but I think what I just realized is that it’s the eyes of the public, just a way of people getting to see me. It wasn’t as though anyone had a gun to my head — [though] you would have thought that at the beginning, that’s how scared I was.”

But despite notching up a beauty campaign relatively early on in her career, she doesn’t plan to roll out her own clothing or cosmetics line just yet. “I would never say never, because you never know, if it was for a good cause,” she says. “But right now I’ve got my hands full, I’m really enjoying the music part of it, I’m not really thinking about branching off or anything. I just feel as though I’m at Day One with everything, really.”

Big Sexy Hair Comes Through in a Crisis

Ok, ladies and fellas, I don't think my adorable friend and co-worker, "Niecey-Pie", is going to let me get through the day without raving to all of you about her experience with Big Sexy Hair's Root Pump Volumizing Mousse.

Now, she's come to my office many days prior with gorgeous hair singing the praises of this newfound love of hers, but today was a little different. She's now touting Big Sexy Hair as her "Hurricane Essential". I know she wants to tell you herself about her experience (look for her to add a comment soon)... in fact, she's just come in my office to shake her hair at me yet again! Think she's a little excited? Well, her hair looks fab, so she certainly has cause for it. Not only does she have lovely waves throughout, her hair is super soft and shiny, not at all tacky or stiff to the touch and full of volume. Yea, Big Sexy Hair! :o )

Agyness Sets Sights on Hollywood Thanks to Tootsie

Not content with conquering the worlds of modelling and music, it seems Agyness Deyn has her heart set on a career in Hollywood. The Mancunian model, who is currently dating Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, has appeared in a movie made by her Five O’Clock Heroes band-mate Alanna Masterson. The short film, called The Right Side Of My Exultant Brain, also stars Dustin Hoffman’s son Jake and apparently Aggy’s struck up a friendship with Hoffman Senior, who wants to help her make it in the movies.

Hair update: Perhaps annoyed by all the wannabes copying her famous blonde quiff, Agyness Deyn has had her hair shaped into a stark bowl cut with a super-short fringe.

Sula Stiletto Musk Rollerball Perfume Oil

Stiletto Musk Roll-On Perfume

Sula Rollerball Perfume
Petite perfume packages from Sula, each with its own subtle scent that rolls on light-as-air. Stiletto Musk is A warm, sexy scent with notes of musk, amber, dusky florals. This little creation I just couldn't pass up. At only $18, they're worth it.

Again, while on our Hurricane Gustav stress-induced shopping spree, we ran straight for the doors of Anthropologie - another wonderful boutique I never get to visit "in the flesh". There are none near me, so best bet is shopping them online, which is just not the same.

I tried all versions of the Sula rollerballs - Butterfly Kiss, Champagne Sugar, Sunkissed Citrus, and Stiletto Musk (my choice). Sula also makes these scents in bigger bottles and offers Vanilla Blossom as an additional fragrance choice in that size (1 ounce).

Stiletto Musk is not nearly as heavy a fragrance as one might expect from the description and the notes (it's also described as a 'spice'). It truly is light and smells sweetly of amber and musk in a fabulous, sensuous oil. Small enough for your purse, these fragrances in a rollerball dispensing glass bottle are sure to please even the most discriminating tastes. $18 at Anthropologie and b-glowing.
