MAC and Redken for Badgley Mischka Fall 2009

model: Heloise Guerin

"Call it Badgley Mischka does 'Blade Runner' — it's a futuristic evening look, essentially," said Peter Gray, working with Redken at Badgley Mischka, of the hair looks he created. While Gray and the designers were after a polished look, "perfect hair can make you look old," Gray said.

First, he worked Redken's Full Frame 9 Protective Volumizing Mousse throughout the hair using a brush and blow-dryer "to give hair some guts," he explained. "The biggest mistake people make in styling is not to give hair guts," he said. "Hair is impossible to style otherwise, even for professionals. It's hell."

Gray then pulled sections of hair over each ear and gathered the rest into a ponytail. Folding the ponytail in on itself for a short-hair effect — "as if it were just cut off there," Gray explained — he pulled the reserved sections of hair on top of the folded and pinned hair. Gray finished with a shot of Redken's Workforce 9 hair spray, after slightly back-combing the reserved hair for a shot of extra volume, and allowed the ends to move freely.

Tom Pecheux, working for MAC Cosmetics at Badgley Mischka, decided on what he called "a cocktail look" for the makeup. "It's slightly less formal than a red-carpet evening look," he explained. "It's not intended to be too dramatic." First, Pecheux applied matte foundation, then turned his attention to the eyes, creating an ombré effect with navy blue shimmer shadow and pale gray shadow, with a hint of gold pencil to the under-eye area. Pecheux then added lots of black mascara and a hint of pale pink blush. Lips were kept simple, with a nude lip pencil overlaid with a lavender gloss.

WWD reports, " ... this was a beautifully restrained lineup, with construction and draping taking center stage. Of note: the graceful daywear, with black draped dresses and skirts done in silk and wool georgette, as well as long and short toppers in basketweave bouclé."
