SHEA TERRA ORGANICS: Miombo Mango Shea Butter Dead Sea Salt Scrub

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways ...

I'm so excited about Shea Terra Organics I'm finding it hard to control myself in the words I want to use here. I'm trying to recall how I first heard of the brand. Oh yes, it was when I did the piece on Sourcing the World's Best in Beauty earlier this month. Oddly, Shea Terra isn't one of the companies highlighted by Style (although I think it should have been); but in researching one of the products and companies they did highlight, I was brought to b-glowing, a favorite online store of mine.

Anyhoo ... while at b-glowing I was perusing some of their newer brands and lines and began drooling over the Shea Terra body products. I knew I had to have some. I am soooo glad I let temptation get the better of me on this occasion!

There's much to learn from Shea Terra and to talk about. As such, I'm writing a feature on a different product each day this week. I just can't bring myself to write all I want to say about the lot of them in this one article. Yes, they are that good!

First, a little about Shea Terra Organics:

  • Products are 99-100% natural
  • No Artificial Fragrances: Artificial fragrances can cause allergies and many contain carcinigens
  • Shea Terra Organics uses only pure fruit and plant extracts to enhance the therapeutic value of our products. Don't expect an herbal, medicinal fragrance. Our carefully formulated fragrances rival some of the largest cosmetic companies without compromise to health
  • Shea Terra Organics products DO NOT contain sulfates, parabens, silicone, artificial coloring or synthetic fragrance. The products are cruelty free
  • Research and test sustainable, indigenous African ingredients for healing and reparative benefits. It's not enough to just moisturize with our products; Shea Terra uses the powers of Africa's oils, herbs and butters to create highly effective skin care treatments
  • Use only sustainable raw materials to support preservation of the continent's rich and rare resources

Now, a little about their luxurious body scrub - Miombo Mango Shea Butter Dead Sea Salt Scrub

  • Sourced from the depths of the Dead Sea and the expanse of the African savannah, Dead Sea salt and organic shea butter combine to produce this luxuriant, non-oily body scrub
  • For this delectable treat Shea Terra begins in the Miombo forest of Central Africa where bush mangos sweetly scent the air
  • Their succulent, juicy aroma begins with a note of tartness and finishes with a mouth watering, sun ripened sweetness
  • Bush mangos are indigenous to the Miombo forest now endangered by foreign logging
  • Ten times saltier than the ocean, Dead Sea salt promotes skin healing and cell renewal
  • Combined with wild harvested African herbs of aloe ferox, kigelli, and African potato, reparative, organic shea butter deeply moisturizes the skin, penetrating deep beneath the epidermis to deliver valuable nutrients
  • 99% Natural. Paraben Free. No Artificial Fragrance.

REVIEW:
Of all the Shea Terra body products I got, this one may have been the one I was least expecting to be wow'ed over. I was wrong! This scrub is absolutely wonderful. The salt crystals are rather course yet "melt" easily against and into the skin lending a great exfoliating experience. The delicate scent gives the appeal of biting into a sweet, ripe, juicy mango - absolutely delicious. The scrub not only buffs and polishes skin but provides superb moisturization to the skin. The surprising effect is glowing skin, soft and hydrated but not at all oily, even with its 35% butter and oil content. Again, this is a 99% all natural product (practically unheard of), full of healing sea salts, organic shea butter, soothing hydrating herbs and other organic ingredients, with a succulent aroma - 8 oz, $18. Love it! The scrubs are also available in these scents (which I'll speak more of in future posts this week): Bourbon Vanilla, Pink Guava Pomegranate, Lavender of the Khoisan

Shea Terra scrubs are available through these retailers: b-glowing, Nordstrom, Shea Terra Organics

REVIEW: Hana Professional Flat Iron

Here's a hair tool company marketing themselves as delivering top of the line components and high tech styling without a lot of the hype. The HANA Professional flat iron features Advanced Fusion Molding for reinforced tourmaline ceramic plates that are glass-smooth & durable. Tourmaline, a precious mineral, generates intense negative ions conditioning damaged hair follicles for healthy, frizz-free shine that lasts. You don't find the combination of both ceramic and tourmaline in a flat iron ordinarily, and certainly not in one under $100.

This is a great little bargain for your buck! I was impressed with the results from the Hana Professional Flat Iron 1" (image above). First, let me tell you what you get with this product as this is part of its appeal.

- features -
  • Advanced Tourmaline Ceramic Plates for Accelerated Ion Generation and Maximum Frizz-Free, Conditioning Shine
  • Ceramic Is Naturally Hygienic, Protects Color & Retards Fading
  • Floating 1” Plates Auto-Adjust To Glide Over Any Hair Texture
  • Curved Plate Edges For Versatile Styling - Curl, Flip or Straighten
  • Adjustable Temperature Dial - 5 Settings from 140-450° F for All Hair Types
  • Flash Heats in Seconds with Instant Compensation for Heat Loss
Ergonomic Handle Design with No-Slip Grip
  • Smooth Grooves Keep Hair Strands Separate and Snag-Free
  • Tangle-Free Salon Quality Cord Swivels 360°; Convenient Hanging Loop
  • Energy Efficient at 38 Watts
  • Independent On/Off Switch
  • Includes Luxe Heat Proof Storage Pouch, Heat Proof Silicone Mat, & Special Edition Tin Case
  • One Year Warranty
  • The Iron and Kit with Accessories - currently $89! (see bottom)

REVIEW: This really is a nice little tool for the money. I like getting ceramic and tourmaline technology for under $100, not to mention the accessories and warranty that come with it. The kit makes it easy to travel with, a huge plus. The one drawback I found with the kit is that I can't fathom using the heat proof silicone mat because it just has too strong a chemical smell to it. It took me a little longer to straighten with this iron than it does with either my CHI or T3, but this is fairly comparable in results, my hair was straight and shiny on completion of ironing and the HANA is more reasonably priced than the T3.

For more information about this ceramic flat iron or to purchase, visit Hana Salon online.

Color Swatching Before You Shop With KarlaSugar

[MAC+es+duos+2+(Medium).jpg]

My sweeties, you're going to love this!

KarlaSugar, a beauty diva and regular at my beloved MakeUp Alley (MUA), has a site that will bring you into the light - the color swatching light that is. The site is called, aptly, The Next Best Thing to Going Shopping Yourself. She's dishing out shades for new color collections that we all want to know more about: MAC, Chantecaille, Guerlain, Chanel and more. Her site is devoted to giving accurate swatching of product shades so we're not surprised when we order a much wanted shadow, lippie or foundation only to be surprised that it's not the color we thought it would be when it arrives.

Currently, she's showcasing MAC Electroflash Eyeshadow Duos, MAC Sonic Chic Mineralize Blushes, Guerlain Kiss Kiss Maxi Shine and a shade comparison between Smashbox and MAC green eyeshadows on her main page. You can click on the images on her site to enlarge them for better detailing as well. I also see she's got the MAC Nordstrom Colour Forms pigment and lipstick swatches in her archives. That collection is hugely hot right now!

You're going to want to *favorites* this site, I can tell you that right now! I've got her in my blogroll under Beauty and Fashion Blogs I Love for easy reference as well. Give her a visit and let her know via comments to her posts or an email that we appreciate her sharing these with us! xo

Keira Knightly Revisited

Found in a past issue of Elle magazine now being featured in India, Keira Knightly speaks with interviewer Jeff Gordinier. Here's a little of what was said.

Do you remember the first time you became aware of your sexual prowess?
Oh my God, I don't think I'm aware now... No, you're right. I'm lying. I'm lying. I don't know why I said that. No, I'm not lying actually. I'll just have an argument with myself!

Although seemingly unable to decide, Gordinier believes it's just this kind of tennis playing, the keeping the public guessing, that is key to Keira's label as a classic beauty. He believes it's part of the role she must play in personifying the characteristic.

Gordinier reports Keira's acting efforts were initially written off. Now, however, "she has evolved into a stylist of remarkable delicacy with the mobile, expressive eyes of a silent film star and the piercing, plummy vocal cadences that you'd expect from a grande dame on a West End stage."

He states she's good at tiny gestures. Says Matthew Rhys, who co-starred with her in The Edge of Love, "This is a girl who knows exactly how to work of closeup."

Indeed.

BACKSTAGE: Roberto Cavalli - Fall 2008

Makeup artist Pat McGrath and hairstylist Guido Palau served up a blend of muted makeup and wet-effect French twists that complemented designer Roberto Cavalli's gently pretty new mood.

McGrath supplied a soft look that began with liquid foundation, concealer, and pressed powder to create an even, natural canvas. Next, the makeup artist applied a trio of eye shadows for a low-key lid look: Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour in Gold on the upper lid, NARS Cream Eyeshadow in Paper Tiger (a toffee color) along the outer edge, and CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Eye Shadow in Tapestry Taupe along the lower lash line. Then McGrath used a wet liner brush to apply BeneFit Show Offs in Miss Moon, a white-gold loose powder, to the inner corners of the eye. A dab of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream in the center of the lid added shine.

show offs!

She curled the lashes before brushing on brown volumizing mascara and filled in brows with blond and brown pencils. She used a combination of bronzer and blush (Max Factor ColorGenius Bronzer on the outer cheeks and ColorGenius Blush in Roses on the apples of the cheeks) to give the skin a warm glow. McGrath also used NARS the Multiple in Copacabana, a pearl-toned multipurpose cream, to highlight the cheeks, nose, and brows. Max Factor Colour Perfection Lipstick in rosy-brown Sepia, pressed onto the lips with a finger, added the ideal soft finishing touch.
NARS The Multiple Multi-Purpose Stick, Copacabana

Cavalli's fifties silhouettes—nipped waists and full skirts—mixed with a slew of exotic accents like sequins and paillettes, inspired the models' subtly undone updos. "It's as if she had been swimming and had twisted her hair up herself at the back," said Palau. "This is why we didn't do perfect twists or coifs. It seems so much sexier to suggest that this woman would have styled her hair herself."

To create a homespun effect, Palau applied Redken Ringlet 07, a cream gel that moisturizes and defines curls, to damp hair before roughly blowing it dry. Next, he wrapped small sections of hair around a T3 curling iron to create loose waves. Once curled, the hair was misted with Redken Vinyl Glam 02, a shine-enhancing spritz. "It gives the hair a wet look," said the stylist. He pulled the hair back and pinned it into a French twist before back-combing the pieces at the top of the head to make for a more prominent forelock. Said Palau, "It's the perfect style to wear after a day at the beach. Don't worry about it looking too perfect. The twist alone gives it a chic edge."

Nanadebary is Back

Historically, Nanadebary Bronze EDT, in combination and/or alternately with REN Rosa Maya, has been my go-to, one may even say "signature" fragrance(s) for the Fall/Winter season. There's just something about the richness, the depth and the warmth of the fragrance that keeps me coming back to it year after year. I'm psyched about trying the EDP version, only recently made available.

The Nanadebary series (even in the EDT) hasn't been easy to find for about a year. I see now, though, Luckyscent has the new eau de parfum of the fragrances available through their retail venue, Scent Bar. You still can't order it online from them (not sure why) but they will take phone orders for the Nanadebary fragrances. Also, a little research shows we're able to obtain the EDT versions through BeautyHabit and Luscious Cargo as well. The fragrances are available in 50ml and 100ml bottles (the larger is an atomizer bottle)

Here's a breakdown of the notes for each variation:

Nanadebary Pink
This is her original, classic scent - delicate bergamot and ginger topnotes; with a heart of jasmine, iris and sandalwood; over a base of vanilla and musk.

Nanadebary Bronze
Radiant mandarin and ylang-ylang open the top; jasmine and tuberose at the heart; with iris, cedar and cinnamon at the base.

Nanadebary Green
Sparkling bergamot and citron topnotes; with a heart of basil and cardamon; over thyme, musk and vetiver.

The Beauty of India Inspired Jewelry

"Monsoon Rain" by Nicky Butler

One of my favorite jewelry designers has been bit by the Indian Muse. Well, not really surprisingly so if you consider his background. Oh, how I wish I had discretionary dollars to pick up a few of these gorgeous pieces. If you've been following style trends lately, you know that artists and designers are turning to the icons of India for inspiration right now. Fragrances, cosmetics, skincare, clothing, and certainly jewelry.

The heirloom-like jewelry Nicky is known for stemmed from years of dealing antiques in London’s Portobello Market (the world’s largest antique marketplace) and the annual King’s Road Antiques Fair. His found treasures were hugely successful, and their popularity ignited Nicky’s interest in jewelry design. This niche attracted a wide array of fans, and Nicky had the honor of being commissioned by some of the biggest designers in high fashion – Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld – to create runway collections. Although designers are pairing his work with evolving and trendy fashions, Nicky’s creations remain stable and everlasting – held on permanent display in London’s famed Victoria & Albert Museum. Nicky has perfected the art of blending old and new. His interest in India’s most opulent dynasties inspired him to create new pieces for the Raj collection. These numbered, limited-edition pieces are entirely hand-created with Old World craftsmanship values in mind.

I adore Nicky Butler. I have a preference for sterling and platinum over gold, and my interest in gemstones has spanned many lifetimes (ha ha). So it is no surpise I'd be enamored with Nicky's jewelry. In his Raj Collection, Nicky brings the lush colors and intricate artistry of India's dynasties to his jewelry collection. He has combined the influences of his faith and his British sensibility with his extensive work in India to create this collection. Patterned after the jewels of the Mughal Empire, India's most opulent dynasty, each piece is handcrafted and available only in limited numbers.

My favorite pieces of his incorporate one of his trademark gems, the rainbow moonstone. This Monsoon Rain necklace above from his Raj Collection is no exception. Cabochon prehnite stands out among a multigem cluster of faceted citrine, peridot, rainbow moonstone, amethyst and blue topaz stones. Bezel-set gemstone clusters travel up the sterling silver chain and give the necklace a dainty, feminine feel. Just love it!

A little taste of some other pieces from the Raj Collection are shown here:

Monochromatic: Fall's Fashion Look

design: Jean Paul Gaultier; model: Lily Donaldson; photo: Marcio Madeira

This Fall, designers like Maurizio Pecoraro are advocating a monochrome vision that extends from head to stockinged toe. The key to this ultra-matched look is tights, particularly in hard-to-find hues like persimmon at Bottega Veneta, ocher at Nina Ricci, and burgundy at Albino. So, put away the matte black Wolfords for next season. Knee boots will create a similar effect as seen in the collections of Akris and Halston, but hosiery's reign is undeniable. Even pattern-loving designers like Anna Sui and Paul Smith did custom legwear for complete coordination. Match away, my lovelies!

ROXY RANT:
Here she goes again ; -)

Ok, now I'm going to get on a bit of a bandwagon - those who can't tolerate, skip over to the next article posting (lol).

First let me say, I really love Prescriptives makeup. In fact, my holy grail blush right now is their Colorscope Plush Blush gel-stick and their Flawless Skin Foundation has been one of my top three foundations for years. Love it! What I just can't fathom are these cosmetics companies selling a little jar of loose mineral powder for the likes of $20+. And here, Px is wanting $32.50 for theirs. Come on! Really?

To be fair, I've not yet tried Prescriptives All Skins to make a fair comparison, BUT ... I'll direct you guys once again to a little known company I've found to deliver the BEST in loose mineral powders yielding fab results at a reasonable cost - Erth Minerals available through LushBrush. Their jar (also with sifter) contains the same amount of product (w/same SPF) for $13. So if you can match your skin to their shades (11 to choose from), why would you pay almost $20 more? For the convenience of picking it up at the department store counter rather than ordering online? Maybe, but that's a pricey convenience charge. Got a comment on this - let us know what you think in comments.

HOW TO: Ali Larter - Allure's July Cover Girl

Allure creative director Paul Cavaco chose a silk beige dress by Calvin Klein Collection for Larter, which she loved so much, she asked if she could buy it. (The people at Calvin Klein were happy to give it to her.) "It's the most comfortable thing I own," she later said. Here, hairstylist Sebastien Richard fixes her hair between shots.

Makeup artist Brigitte Reiss-Andersen gave Larter a warm glow with sheer gold and light brown eye shadow on her eyes, a soft pink blush and bronzer on her cheeks, and a shiny nude lip color. "It's sunny and pretty," says Reiss-Andersen, shown here applying a nude lip gloss.

Larter grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia. She calls herself an authentic Jersey girl, which she defines as someone who's "feisty, earnest, honest and fun. To me, being a Jersey girl is more about how we look at life. No apologies," says Larter.

To get her look:

Color Design - Eyeshadow (Bikini Golden, Pose)

Lancome Color Design Eyeshadow - Blend gold and copper powder eye shadows and brush them over your eyelids, extending to just above the creases but not all the way up to the brow bones.

Color Design Blush - Blush & Bronzers (Petticoat Pink)

Lancome Color Design Cream Blush - Use two fingers to dab a pink cream blush on the apples of your cheeks, and blend well.

Color Fever Lipstick Roses - Lipcolor (Rose Tempest)

Lancome Color Fever Lipstick - Apply an opaque mauve lipstick to tie the look together.
